தன்நெஞ் சறிவது பொய்யற்க பொய்த்தபின்

தன்நெஞ்சே தன்னைச் சுடும்.

 

பொருள்:

ஒருவன் தன் நெஞ்சம் அறிவதாகிய ஒன்றைக்குறித்துப் பொய்ச் சொல்லக்கூடாது, பொய் சொன்னால் அதைக்குறித்துத் தன் நெஞ்சமே தன்னை வருத்தும்.

 

Translation:

Speak not a word which false thy own heart knows

Self-kindled fire within the false one’s spirit glows.

 

Meaning:

Let not a man knowingly tell a lie; for after he has told the lie, his mind will burn him (with the memory of his guilt).

ஹரிச்சந்திரன்

வாழ்நாள் முழுவதும் பொய்யே கூறாத ராஜா ஹரிச்சந்திரன் மீது கொண்ட நன்மதிப்பால் தங்கள் மகனுக்கு ‘ஹரிச்சந்திரன்’ என்று பெயரிட்டு அவனை பொய்யே பேசக்கூடாது என்று சொல்லி வளர்த்தனர். ஒருவேளை பொய் சொன்னால் உன் மூக்கு நீளமாக வளரும் என்று பயம் காட்டினர்.  அதனால் ஹரிச்சந்திரன் சிறுவயது முதல் பொய் கூறாமல் நல்ல பிள்ளையாக வளர்ந்தான்.

 

அவன் வகுப்பில் ஆசிரியை ஒரு பூந்தொட்டியில் குட்டி மலர் செடி ஒன்றினை வளர்த்து வந்தார். வகுப்பில் உள்ள மாணவர்கள் தினம் ஒருவர் என ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் ஒரு மாணவர் அதற்கு தண்ணீர் ஊற்ற வேண்டும். அன்று ஹரிச்சந்திரன் தண்ணீர் ஊற்ற வேண்டிய முறை. காலையில் சீக்கிரமே வந்த ஹரிச்சந்திரன் தண்ணீர் ஊற்ற முயன்றபோது, அவன் கை தவறி பூந்தொட்டி கீழே விழுந்து உடைந்துவிட்டது. தெரியாமல் நடந்த தவறுக்கு வருத்தப்பட்ட அவன், ஆசிரியை வகுப்பிற்கு வரும் முன்னே அவர்களிடம் சென்று உண்மையை கூறலாம் என்று முடிவெடுத்து அவரது அறைக்கு வெளியே காத்திருந்தான்.

 

வகுப்பிற்கு நேரமாகவே மணி அடித்தவுடன் ஹரிச்சந்திரன் வகுப்பிற்கு சென்று விட்டான். அன்று சில சொந்த அலுவல்கள் காரணமாக தாமதமாக வந்த ஆசிரியை நேராக வகுப்பிற்கே வந்து விட்டார். ஏற்கனவே எரிச்சலில் இருந்த அவர் உடைந்த பூந்தொட்டியை கண்டதும் கடும் கோபம் கொண்டார். “யார் இந்த பூந்தொட்டியை கீழே தள்ளி உடைத்தது?” என்று கத்தினார். ஹரிச்சந்திரன் அவரது கோபத்தை கண்டு பயந்து போனான். மாணவர்கள் அனைவரும் அமைதியாக இருக்கவே “இன்று தண்ணீர் ஊற்றுவது யாருடைய முறை?” என்று வினவினார். மாணவர்கள் அனைவரும் ஒருமித்த உரத்த குரலில் “ஹரிச்சந்திரன்” என்று கூறினர். ஆசிரியர் தன்னை கோபமாக திரும்பிப் பார்க்கவே, உண்மையை சொன்னால் ஆசிரியர் என்ன செய்வாரோ என்று பயந்த ஹரிச்சந்திரன் “எனக்கும் தெரியாது. நான் வந்த போதே பூந்தொட்டி உடைந்து தான் இருந்தது” என்று பொய் கூறினான். ஆசிரியர் பாடம் நடத்த தொடங்கினாலும் ஹரிச்சந்திரனின் மனம் உறுத்திக்கொண்டே இருந்தது. பொய் கூறியதை நினைத்து பயந்தான்.

 

வீட்டிற்கு வந்த மகன் சோகமாக இருப்பதைக் கண்ட அவனது தாயார் “என்ன ஆச்சு ஹரிச்சந்திரா? ஏன் ஏதோ மாதிரி இருக்கிறாய்?” என்று கேட்டார். தான் பொய் சொன்னதாகக் கூறினால் அம்மாவும் கோபப்படுவார் என்று நினைத்த ஹரிச்சந்திரன் “ஒன்றும் இல்லை அம்மா” என்று கூறி விட்டு தன் அறைக்கு சென்றான்.

 

வீட்டுப்பாடம் எழுதிவிட்டு, உணவருந்திவிட்டு உறங்கிய ஹரிச்சந்திரன் விழித்ததும் கண்ணாடியில் தன் முகத்தை கண்டு திடுக்கிட்டான். அவன் மூக்கு சற்று நீளமாக வளர்ந்திருந்தது. அதைக்கண்ட அவன் அம்மா சந்தேகப்பட்டு கத்த ஆரம்பித்தார் “ஹரிச்சந்திரா, நீ பொய் கூறினாயா?”. பயந்த அவன் “இல்லை, இல்லை. நான் பொய் கூறவில்லை” என்று மறுபடியும் பொய் கூறிவிட்டு பள்ளியை நோக்கி ஓடினான். அதனால் அவன் மூக்கு இன்னும் நீளமாக வளர்ந்தது. அவன் மேலும் மூக்கை கண்ட அவனது நண்பர்கள் “டேய் ஹரி. நேற்று நீ தானே பூந்தொட்டியை உடைத்துவிட்டு பொய் கூறினாயா?” என்று சீண்டினார்கள். “இல்லை, இல்லை. நான் பொய் கூறவில்லை” என்று மறுபடியும் பொய் கூறிவிட்டு ஓடினான். மூக்கு மேலும் நீளமானது. அதேநேரத்தில் உள்ளே வந்த வகுப்பாசிரியை அவனது நீண்ட மூக்கை கண்டு “உண்மையைக் கூறு ஹரிச்சந்திரன். நேற்று நீ தானே பூந்தொட்டியை உடைத்தாய்?” என்று கேட்கவே “இல்லை” என்று கத்திக்கொண்டே ஓடினான். மூக்கும் நீண்டு கொண்டே போனது. ஓடிய வேகத்தில் கால் இடறி கீழே விழுந்தான். எழுந்த அவனுக்கு அது வெறும் கனவு என்று புரிந்தது. ஆயினும் பயந்து போய் அழ ஆரம்பித்தான். அங்கே வந்த அம்மா அவன் அழுவதை கண்டு திடுக்கிட்டாள். என்னாச்சு ஏதாச்சு என்று விசாரிக்க அழுதுகொண்டே உண்மையை ஒப்பித்தான் ஹரிச்சந்திரன். அதைக் கேட்டு சிரித்த அவனது தாயார் “போ, பள்ளிக்கூடத்துக்கு கிளம்ப தயாராகு” என்றாள்.

 

ஹரிச்சந்திரன் புறப்படும் முன் அவனது தாயார் ஒரு பரிசு பெட்டியைக் அவனிடம் கொடுத்தார். “நீ உண்மையை கூறியதற்கு பாராட்டுக்கள் ஹரிச்சந்திரா! இதை உனது ஆசிரியையிடம் கொடுத்து அவரிடமும் உண்மையைக் கூறிவிடு. நிச்சயம் அவர் உன்னை மன்னிப்பார். அப்போதுதான் உன் மனமும் அமைதி அடையும்” என்று அன்பாய் கூறினார். ஹரிச்சந்திரனும் மகிழ்ச்சியுடன் பரிசு பெட்டியை ஆசிரியர் அறைக்கு கொண்டு சென்று தன் ஆசிரியரிடம் கொடுத்தான். பின் “என்னை மன்னித்து விடுங்கள். நேற்று என் கை தவறிதான் பூந்தொட்டி கீழே விழுந்து உடைந்தது. நீங்கள் கோபமாக கேட்கவே, பயந்துபோய் பொய் கூறி விட்டேன்” என்றான். ஒன்றும் கூறாத ஆசிரியை பரிசு பெட்டியை திறந்து பார்த்தார். உள்ளே ஒரு பூந்தொட்டி அதில் ஒரு பூச்செடி இருந்தது. “சரி, நீ வகுப்புக்குப் போ!” என்று மட்டுமே கூறினார் ஆசிரியை. சற்று வருத்தத்துடன் சென்றான் ஹரிச்சந்திரன்.

 

சிறிது நேரத்தில் வகுப்புக்குள் கையில் பரிசு பெட்டியுடன் நுழைந்த ஆசிரியை “ஹரிச்சந்திரன், இங்கே வா” என்ற வகுப்பு முன்னிலையில் அழைத்தார். பின் மாணவர்களை பார்த்து “மாணவர்களே, நேற்று ஹரிச்சந்திரன் தான் பூந்தொட்டியை உடைத்தானாம்” என்று கூற மாணவர்கள் அனைவரும் அதிர்ச்சியுடன் ஒருவரை ஒருவர் பார்த்தனர். ஹரிச்சந்திரன் தலைகுனிந்து நின்றான். பின் ஆசிரியை தொடர்ந்தார் “அதை ஈடுகட்டவே இன்று ஒரு புதிய பூந்தொட்டியை வாங்கி எனக்கு பரிசளித்துள்ளான்” என்று அதை காண்பிக்க மாணவர்கள் சிரிக்கத் தொடங்கினர். ஹரிச்சந்திரன் அவமானத்தில் அழ ஆரம்பித்தான்.

 

பின் அவரது ஆசிரியை “இப்போது அனைவரும் ஹரிச்சந்திரனுக்கு பலமாக கை தட்டுங்கள்” என்றார். சற்றும் எதிர்பார்த்திராத மாணவர்கள் ஹரிச்சந்திரனுக்காக கைதட்டினர். “ஹரிச்சந்திரன், உண்மையை ஒப்புக் கொள்ள தைரியம் வேண்டும். நீ செய்த தவறை உணர்ந்து, உண்மையை கூறி அதை சரி செய்ய முயற்சித்தது மிகவும் பாராட்டுக்குரியது. உன் உண்மைக்கும் தைரியத்திற்கும் பரிசாக இந்தச் செடிக்கு ‘ஹரிச்சந்திரன்’ என்று பெயரிட்டு வளர்க்கப் போகிறேன்.” என்றார். ஹரிச்சந்திரன் மிகவும் மகிழ்ந்தான். மாணவர்கள் இன்னும் சத்தமாக கைதட்டினர்.

 

பின் ஆசிரியை “நானும் அமைதியாக கேட்டிருந்தால் நீயும் தயங்காமல் உண்மையை கூறி இருப்பாய். நானும் திருத்திக்கொள்கிறேன்” என்று கூறி அவனைத் தட்டிக் கொடுத்துவிட்டு பாடம் நடத்த ஆரம்பித்தார். அந்தச் செடி பிற்காலத்தில் ஹரிச்சந்திரன் நினைவாக பள்ளியில் பெரிய மரமாய் வளர்ந்தது!

 

குழந்தைகளா, கதை பிடித்ததா?. எந்த சூழ்நிலையிலும் பொய் கூறாமல் உண்மையை மட்டுமே பேசவேண்டும். அவ்வாறு பொய் கூறினால், நம் மனம் நம்மை வருத்திக் கொண்டே இருக்கும்.

 

பெற்றோர்களே, நாம் குழந்தைகளை ‘பொய் சொல்லக்கூடாது’ என்று சொல்லி சொல்லி வளர்க்கிறோம். ஆனால் அவர்கள் எப்போதும் உண்மையை பேசுவதற்கான சூழ்நிலையை கொடுக்கிறோமா என்று யோசிக்க வேண்டும். “நான் ஒன்றும் செய்ய மாட்டேன். உண்மையை சொல்” என்று குழந்தையிடம் கேட்போம். அது நம்மை நம்பி உண்மையைச் சொன்னவுடன் அதை திட்டவோ அடிக்கவோ செய்வோம். அடுத்தமுறை குழந்தை உண்மையை கூற யோசிக்கும். உண்மையைக் கூறினால் எப்படியும் அம்மா திட்டுவாள் அடிப்பாள். பொய் கூறி எளிதாக தப்பித்து விடலாம் என்ற எண்ணம் உள்ளூன்றும்.

 

ஆகவே நாமும் குழந்தைகளிடம் பொய் கூறாமல், அவர்களுக்கு கொடுத்த வாக்குகளை நிறைவேற்றி, அவர்கள் எப்பொழுதும் உண்மையை பேசுவதற்கான தைரியத்தையும் ஊக்கத்தையும் கொடுத்து நல்ல ஆரோக்கியமான எதிர்காலத்தை உருவாக்குவோம்.

 

 Harichandran

 

Inspired by King Harichandran who never lied in his life, his parents named him ‘Harichandran’ and brought him up telling that he should never lie. His mother even warned him “If you lie, your nose will grow longer”. So Harichandran grew up as a good boy never lying.

 

 

In his class, the teacher has a small plant in a pot. Every student in the class has to take turns and water it everyday. It was Harichandran’s turn that day. He came early to water the plant. when he tried to water the plant, he accidentally knocked it down and the pot broke. Feeling sorry for the accident, he decided to inform his teacher before she comes to the class. She was waiting outside staff room to meet her, but she didn’t turn out that day. As it was getting late and as the school bell rang, Harichandran went back to the class.

 

 

Due to some personal problems, the class teacher arrived late that day and so she directly came to the class. She was already in some disturbed mood. Seeing the broken pot fuelled her anger and she started shouting “Who broke the pot?”. Harichandran was scared of her anger. He feared that the teacher might get mad if he tells the truth now. The class being silent the teacher asked again “Whose turn is to water the plants today?’. All students replied in unison “Harichandran mam”. When the teacher’s angry eyes fell on him, he lost all his courage to tell the truth and lied instead “Ma’am it was already broken when I came in”. Though the teacher started taking class, Harichandran’s heart was troubled of the lie he told.

 

 

Seeing that her son who returned from school was very dull and confused, Harichandran’s mother was concerned. She inquired “What’s up Harichandra? Are you okay?”. Fearing that his mother also might scold him if she knows that he had lied, he said “Nothing” and went to his room. After finishing homework and dinner, he went to sleep.

 

 

When he woke up next morning, he was startled to see his face in mirror. As his mother had warned, his nose had grown longer. Seeing his nose, his mom shouted “Did you lie anytime Harichandra?”. Fearing his mom’s angry snarl, he said “No, no, I didn’t lie” and started running towards his school. His friends seeing his elongated nose teased him “Hey Hari, you only broke the flower pot huh”. “No, no, I didn’t”, Harichandran lied again and started running. His class teacher was just entering the class. She too on seeing his long nose questioned him “Is that you who broke my flower pot yesterday?” and looked closely at him. Harichandran started running again shouting “Nooooo”. Just then he stumbled and fell down. Only when he got up, did he realise it was all a dream. Horrified by the dream, he started crying. Hearing his cry, his mum rushed to his room. “Sweety, why are you crying?”, his mom asked concerned. The little boy told everything that happened in the class and his dream. The mom smiled at him and said “It’s ok honey. Go, get ready to school”.

 

 

When Harichandran was ready to leave to school, his mom gave him a gift box and said “Harichandra, I really appreciate that you told me the truth. I want you to give this to your class teacher and and tell her the truth as well. I am sure your mam will understand. Only that will give your heart peace”. Harichandran happily went to school and rushed to the staff room. He gifted the box to his class teacher and confessed “Ma’am, I am really sorry. Yesterday it was my fault that by accident the flower pot fell down and broke. I wanted to tell you the truth, but you asked angrily. So I lied out of fear”. His teacher didn’t say anything. Instead she opened the gift box and found a beautiful flower plant in a decorated flower pot. In a plain tone she said “You can now go to class”. Feeling little disappointed, Harichandran went to his class.

 

 

When the bell rang, the teacher entered the class with the box that Harichandran gifted. She then called out Harichandran in front of the class “Harichandran, come here”. As all the eyes were fixated on Harichandran, the teacher said “It was Harichandran who broke the flower pot yesterday”. The class let out a surprise. Harichandran hanged his head down in shame. The teacher then continued “To compensate, he has got me this new flower pot, look” she raised and showed the pot to the entire class. The gasp turned to giggle. Tears trickled down Harichandran’s cheeks.

 

 

Suddenly, his class teacher said aloud “Can you all applaud for Harichandran?”. Puzzled, children clapped for him. The teacher then turned to Harichandran and said “Hari, it needs immense courage to accept one’s mistake and your effort to fix it is laudable. You’re definitely a brave boy. In remembrance of your honest act, I’m going to name this plant after you and this will always speak of you!” appreciated the teacher. As she finished, all his classmates clapped louder and Harichandran was elated.

 

 

His teacher also said “Had I not been angry, you wouldn’t have lied as well. I’ll hereafter not be angry questioning kids giving them the liberty to speak the truth”. Patting Harichandran on his back, the teacher continued the class. Later, the plant grew up to a big tree in the school reminding everyone of Harichandran’s honesty.
