இனிய உளவாக இன்னாத கூறல்

கனிஇருப்பக் காய்கவர்ந் தற்று

Meaning:

இனிய சொற்கள் இருக்கும்போது அவற்றைப் பேசாமல் கடுஞ்சொற்களைப் பேசுவது, இனிய பழம் இருக்கும்போது காயைப் பறித்துத் தின்பதைப் போன்றது.

 

Translation:

Pleasant words are easy, bitter words to use,

Is, leaving sweet ripe fruit, the sour unripe to choose.

 

Meaning:

To say disagreeable things when agreeable are at hand is like eating unripe fruit when there is ripe.

மந்திர மரம்

முன்னொரு காலத்தில், ஒரு ஊரில் யுகேந்திரன், மகேந்திரன் என்ற சகோதரர்கள் வாழ்ந்து வந்தனர். யுகேந்திரன் மிகவும் நல்லவன். இளகிய மனதுடையவன். இனிய கனிவான சொற்களையே பேசுபவன். ஆனால் மகேந்திரனோ வாய்க்கு வந்த படியெல்லாம் பேசி மற்றவர் மனதை புண்படுத்துவான்.

ஒரு நாள் மழை இரவு, ஒரு முதியவர் மகேந்திரன் வீட்டுத்திண்ணையில் தஞ்சம் தேடினார். அதைக் கண்டு கோபமுற்ற மகேந்திரன் கொஞ்சம் கூட மரியாதை இல்லாமல் “யோவ் கிழவா! எவ்வளவு தைரியம் இருந்தால் என் வீட்டு திண்ணையில் படுத்து இருப்பாய்.. மரியாதையாக இடத்தை காலி செய்” என்று கத்தினான். அந்த முதியவரோ “இந்த இரவு நேரத்தில் நான் எங்கே செல்வேன்? மழை வேறு பெய்கிறது. இன்று ஒரு இரவு இங்கு தங்கி கொண்டு நாளை காலை செல்கிறேன்” என்று கெஞ்சினார். ஆனால் மகேந்திரன் சற்றும் மனம் மாறாமல் அவரை மிரட்டி விரட்ட ஆரம்பித்தான்.

சத்தம் கேட்டு பக்கத்து வீட்டில் வசித்த யுகேந்திரன் வெளியே வந்தான். அந்த முதியவரை பார்த்து “பெரியவரே, தாங்கள் என் வீட்டில் தங்கி கொள்ளலாம் வாருங்கள்” என்று அன்பாய் அழைத்து அவருக்கு இரவு உணவு உபசரித்து நிம்மதியாய் தூங்க செய்தான். அதிகாலை எழுந்த அந்த முதியவர் “மகனே, எனக்கு உதவியதற்கு மிகவும் நன்றி. உனக்கு என்றாவது உதவி தேவைப்பட்டால் இந்த பெட்டியை திறந்து பார்” என்று கூறி ஒரு மரப்பெட்டியை கொடுத்துச் சென்றார்.

சில காலம் கழித்து, ஒருநாள் யுகேந்திரனுக்கு உடல்நிலை சரியில்லாமல் போனது. எந்த வைத்தியராலும் அவனை குணப்படுத்த முடியவில்லை. மிகவும் கஷ்டப்பட்ட அவனுக்கு அந்தப் பெரியவர் கொடுத்துச் சென்ற பெட்டி ஞாபகம் வந்தது. அந்த மரப் பெட்டியை அவன் திறந்து பார்த்தபோது, அதனுள் ஒரு வரைபடமும், “மாயங்கள் செய்யும் மந்திர மரம்; மானும் மயிலும் வழிகாட்டும்” என்ற குறிப்பும் இருந்தது.

அந்த வரைபடத்தில் இருந்த இடத்திற்கு யுகேந்திரன் சென்றபோது, அதில் குறிப்பிட்டு இருந்தது போலவே ஓர் ஆண் மயில் தன் தோகையை விரித்து ஆடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. அதன் அருகே சென்ற யுகேந்திரன் “அகிலம் வியக்கும் அழகிய மயிலே, மந்திர மரத்திற்கு கூட்டிச் செல்லும் மானிடம் என்னைக் கொண்டுபோய் விடுவாயா?” என்று அன்பாய் வினவினான். மயிலும் மகிழ்ச்சியாய் அவனை மானிடம் கொண்டு சேர்த்தது. மயிலுக்கு நன்றி  கூறிவிட்டு மானை நோக்கி நடந்தான்.

“கண்களைக் கவரும் புள்ளிமானே, தயவு செய்து என்னை அந்த மந்திர மரத்திற்கு அழைத்துச் செல்வாயா?” என்று அமைதியாய் வேண்டினான். மானும் அவனை மந்திர மரம் இருக்கும் அடர்ந்த காட்டுக்குள் அழைத்துச் சென்றது. மானுக்கும் நன்றி தெரிவித்துவிட்டு மரங்களை பார்த்தான்.

அனைத்து மரங்களும் ஒன்றுபோல் இருந்தன. அதில் மந்திர மரம் எது என்பதை அறிய “மனம் மயக்கும் மரங்களே, உங்களில் மந்திர மரம் யார் என்று கூறுவீரா?” என்று கேட்டான். உடனே முன்னிருந்த மரங்கள் அனைத்தும் விலகிச் சென்றன. அதன் நடுவே ஒரு பெரிய மரம் தங்கம் போல் மின்னியது. அதனருகே சென்று “மாயங்கள் செய்திடும் மந்திர மரமே, என் மாய நோய் நீங்கிட பழம் ஒன்று தருவாயா?” என்று வேண்டினான். உடனே அந்த மரம் தாழ்ந்து வந்து தன்னிடம் இருந்த பழங்களுள் பெரிய பழுத்த நல்ல சிவப்பான பழத்தை அவனிடம் தந்தது. கைகூப்பி நன்றியுரைத்த யுகேந்திரன் அதை உண்டதும் தன் நோய் நீங்க கண்டான். மேலும் இளமையாகவும் பலசாலியாகவும் உணர்ந்தான்.

வீட்டிற்கு வந்த யுகேந்திரனை கண்ட மகேந்திரன் பொறாமை கொண்டான். உடனே யுகேந்திரனிடம் விசாரிக்க அவனும் அனைத்து விபரங்களையும் விளக்கினான். “இப்பொழுதே அந்த வரைபடத்தை என்னிடம் கொடு” என்று யுகேந்திரனை  ஆணையிட்டான். மறுப்பேதும் கூறாமல் மகேந்திரனிடம் வரைபடத்தை கொடுத்தான் யுகேந்திரன். பேராசை கொண்ட மகேந்திரன் உடனே புறப்பட்டு மயில் இருக்கும் இடத்தை சென்றடைந்தான்.

அங்கே நின்றிருந்த மயிலிடம் “ஏய் மயிலே, ஒழுங்காக மானிடம் என்னை அழைத்துச் செல். இல்லையெனில் உன் தோகையினை பிய்த்து எறிந்து விடுவேன்” என்று மிரட்டினான். மயிலும் பயந்து அவனை மானிடம் அழைத்துச் சென்றது. மானை கண்டவுடன் நேராக அதனிடம் சென்று, “ஏய் மானே, உடனே மந்திர மரம் இருக்கும் இடத்திற்கு என்னை கூட்டிப்போ. இல்லையெனில் இப்பொழுதே உன்னை வேட்டையாடி விடுவேன்” என்று கடிந்தான். மானும் நடுங்கியபடி அவனை அடர்ந்த காட்டிற்கு அழைத்துச் சென்றது.

நேரே மரங்களை நோக்கி “மரங்களே, மரியாதையாக மந்திர மரத்தை காட்டுங்கள். இல்லையெனில் உங்கள் அனைவரையும் வெட்டி சாய்த்து விடுவேன்” என்று உறுமினான். மரங்கள் விலகிட மந்திர மரம் மறுபடியும் ஜொலித்தது. அதன் அருகே சென்ற மகேந்திரன் “என் சகோதரனுக்கு கொடுத்தது போன்று எனக்கும் ஒரு பழத்தை உடனே கொடு” என்று முறையிட்டான். மரமும் அவனிடம் ஒரு பச்சை நிற காயைக் கொடுத்தது. அதனிடமிருந்து வெடுக்கென்று பிடுங்கி கடித்தான்.

மிகவும் கசந்திட ‘தூ’ என்று துப்பினான். ஆயினும் அவன் தோல் சுருங்க ஆரம்பித்தது; முடிகள் நரைத்தது. முதுகில் கூன் விழுந்தது. சட்டென்று ஒரு கிழவன் போல் ஆனான். அதிர்ச்சியடந்த அவன் “ஏய் மரமே, உன்னிடம் இவ்வளவு நல்ல கனிந்த பழங்கள் இருக்க ஏன் கசப்பான காயை எனக்கு கொடுத்தாய்?” என்று கேட்டான். அதற்கு அந்த மரம் “நம் மொழியில் இத்தனை நல்ல கனிவான சொற்கள் இருந்திட நீ கடுமையான சொற்களைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறாய் அல்லவா, அது போல தான்!” என்று பதிலளித்தது.

மகேந்திரன் தன் தவறை உணர்ந்தான். மந்திர மரத்திடம் மிகவும் வருந்தி மன்னிப்பு கேட்டான், “இனிமேல் சத்தியமாக யார் மனதையும் புண் படும் படி பேச மாட்டேன். இந்த ஒரு முறை என்னை மன்னித்து விடு” என்று கெஞ்சினான். கருணை கொண்ட அந்த மரம் அவனை மன்னித்து அவனுக்கு நல்ல கனிந்த சுவையான பழத்தினை அளித்தது. மரத்திற்கு நன்றி தெரிவித்துவிட்டு அதை உண்டான். உடனே அவன் பழைய நிலைக்கு மாறினான்.  வீட்டிற்கு செல்லும் வழியில் மானிடமும் மயிலிடமும் மன்னிப்புக் கோரினான். பின்பு அனைவரும் போற்றும் வகையில் வாழ்ந்தான்.

ஆகவே குழந்தைகளா, நம் சொற்கள் மற்றவர்களை காயப்படுத்தாமல், எப்பொழுதும் நல்ல இனிமையான கனிவான சொற்களையே பேசுவோம். பிறரை மகிழ்வித்து, நாமும் மகிழ்ச்சியாய் வாழ்வோம்!

 

The Miraculous tree

Once upon a time, there lived the brothers – Yugan and Magen. Yugan is very kind hearted and a man of sweet words. But Magen is foul mouthed and always hurt others by his words.

One rainy night, an old man sought shelter in Magen’s veranda. Magen got angry and started shouting “How dare you enter my house! Get out of here immediately”. The shocked and humiliated old man pleaded Magen “Where will I go at this time? It is also raining. Please let me stay here tonight alone”. But Magen disapproved of him staying at his home and started yelling.

Hearing the noise, Yugan who resides in next door came and invited the old man to stay with him “Sir, you can very well spend the night at my home” and also understanding that he hasn’t eaten, served him delicious dinner. The next morning, the old man thanked Yugan and handed him an old wooden box saying, “Dear boy, thanks for sheltering me yesterday night. Please accept this as a token of gratitude. You can open this at time of crisis and it will help you certainly” and left smiling.

After few days, Yugan fell suddenly ill and no doctors could cure him. As he felt devastated, he suddenly remembered the old man’s wooden box. When he opened the box, there was a map with a note “Miraculous tree to make you thew; peacock and deer to guide you through“. He followed the map and reached the spot of peacock.

The peacock was dancing gracefully. Yugan admired its beauty and requested “Oh mesmerizingly beautiful, can you please take me to the deer which can show me the miracle tree?”. The peacock readily took him to the deer. Thanking it, Yugan walked towards the deer and asked “Dear dazzling deer, I plead you to lead me to the miracle tree?”. The deer happily walked him to the deep forest. Yugan thanked the deer and looked at the trees which all looked alike.

He told the trees “Ho lovely trees, can you please show me the miracle tree?”. At that instant, all the trees in the front moved to the sides and a huge tree glittered in gold at the centre. He bowed to the miracle tree and said “I have come a long way seeking your magical fruit to cure my occult disease; please share your fruit and spare my life”. The kind tree bent down to him and gave among all its fruits a big red fleshy fruit. He ate it thanking the tree. To his surprise, he found himself healed and in fact, he felt more young and strong than he ever had been.

On seeing Yugan back vital, Magen got jealous. He curiously asked his brother about it and the selfless Yugan narrated everything. Magen demanded the map immediately. Yugan, without any hesitation handed his brother the map. Magen following the instructions reached the peacock and threatened “Take me to the deer immediately. Else I will pluck all your feathers”. The scared peacock took him to the deer.

He summoned the grazing deer and said “Lead me the miracle tree right away. Else I will hunt you down”. The deer trembled and took him to the miracle tree. Looking at the trees, he ordered “Move out of my way and show the miracle tree right away. Else I will chop you all down”. They moved away paving way to the miracle tree which once again gleamed. He walked straight to the tree and ordered “Hey miracle tree, give me a fruit like you gave my brother at once. Else I will uproot you and sell every part of yours not sparing even a twig”. The tree didn’t say anything, instead gave him a green fruit.

He greedily grabbed it from the tree and took a bite. Alas! He spitted immediately for it was very bitter. And suddenly he felt his skin shrink, hairs turn grey, the hunchback forming and he looked like an old man. In a feeble voice he asked the tree, “When you have so many sweet and tasty ripe fruits, why did you give me this bitter raw fruit?”. The tree gently replied “We have many sweet words in our language; yet you always chose the bitter words. It is just the same”.

Magen immediately realised his mistake. He regretted and repented to the tree. He promised never to hurt others with his words. The tree with all its kindness forgave him and gave him a sweet and tasty ripe fruit. He became normal again thanked the tree. On his way back home, he apologized to the deer and peacock. After that he never ever used hurtful and abusive words and lived as a kind man of sweet words!
